The United National Transport Union (Untu) and Transnet have failed to reach agreement following the breakdown of trust between the two organisations during wage negotiations this year.
Untu spokesperson Sonja Carstens told FTW Online that the transport union had met with Transnet CEO Siyabonga Gama as planned in order to resolve issues between the two groups. It was however in the process of arranging a second meeting because key issues had not been addressed.
“During the meeting, Transnet did not get to the meat of the matter,” she said.
While Untu reached a three-year wage agreement with Transnet in April, the labour union threatened to scrap the agreement as it claimed it had been ‘misled’ because Transnet had failed to disclose the R222-million financial assistance granted to SA Express Airways in December 2017 during negotiations.
“Untu remains of the view that Transnet negotiated in bad faith by misleading us about alleged cash flow problems,” a statement from the transport union read. “It is common sense that Transnet would have had a much better cash flow had it not loaned R222 million to SA Express.”
Further issues between the two entities emerged following allegations that Gama had described Untu general secretary, Steve Harris, as “malicious”.
