AFTER WEEK-long deliberations and threats of disruptions by local residents protesting the imposition of toll fees, the N4 Nkomazi toll plaza at Kaapmuiden between Nelspruit and Malelane opened on schedule last week.
An agreement was reached between Mpumalanga's MEC Steve Mabona, Ian Scott, representing taxi operators and farmers, chief executive of the South African National Roads Agency, Nazir Alli and TRAC chief executive, Trevor Jackson, that interim discounts will be in force 60 days from the date of opening.
Local class 1 vehicles will pay R50 per trip, while taxis operating local routes will pay R3 per trip. School buses will pay R5 per trip and class 4 sugarcane vehicles operating west of Kaapmuiden, will pay R23,12.
It was also agreed that all legal action would be halted.
The Nkomazi toll plaza is the third and last toll plaza to be opened on the South African side of the N4 which is part of the Maputo Corridor linking South Africa and Mozambique.
