An operation by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Unit led to the arrest of nine suspects, including five police officers, a Home Affairs official and three runners in Limpopo and Pretoria this week.
The arrests were a culmination of ‘Operation Mirror’ which targeted corrupt officials and other illegal activities, including the smuggling of suspected stolen vehicles across the Beitbridge border post into Zimbabwe from Musina.
“The nine allegedly worked in accord, arranging fraudulent documents to ensure safe passage for stolen vehicles through the border in exchange for bribes,” said South African Police Service captain Matimba Maluleke.
He noted that the suspects had been the subject of an investigation since 2016 following various complaints from the public.
