Nigeria’s port control runs a tight ship

Last year, Nigeria’s Port State Control (PSC) inspected 726 vessels – with South Africa only inspecting 250 – seemingly indicating that Nigeria is still setting the inspection benchmark for other African countries, according to Nigerian news organisation Vanguard.

Secretary-general of the Abuja Memorandum of Understanding, Mfon Ekong Usoro, was quoted by Vanguard as saying: “The enforcement of Port State Control is a welcomed development, as it brings about a reduction in the cost of freight and cargo to Nigeria.”

Usoro reportedly said that the implication of the development results in fewer cases of sub-standard vessels calling at the nation’s ports, which lowers the risk of pollution in Nigeria’s waters and the creation of more jobs, as Nigeria ensures the repair of detained sub-standard vessels.
