AIRFREIGHT INTO Africa is growing month-on-month, according to Peter Henning, export manager of Bachmann Megafreight.
“The main area of growth is Lagos in Nigeria,” he said, “with large volumes of a wide variety of air cargo going in there.”
Another growth area - although an intermodal movement is Mozambique.
“Although a lot of airfreight is destined for Mozambique, the leg from Johannesburg to Maputo has to be conducted by road transport, because of a lack of flights into that country.”
While a large amount of the air traffic is from SA as a product source, he added, his company also handles a “fair amount” of cargo into Africa transiting through SA from abroad.
“We also get plenty of enquiries all the time, some for air cargoes into the more remote parts of the continent, like Chad, Benin and Monrovia.”
Especially noticeable in this field is telecommunications equipment, he added.
“Indeed electronics and communications equipment are the main product categories that we airfreight into Africa.”
Bachmann Megafreight offers a full range of airfreight services into the continent, using scheduled aircraft for transport, Henning added.
