New York handles record container volumes in May

With the Port Authority of New York (NY) and New Jersey (NJ) handling record cargo volumes in May, is it a sign of a recovering US economy?

Well, partly, said the authority - but also helped along considerably by containers rerouted from West Coast ports.

During May, the port handled 558 991 TEUs - a 12.1% increase in containers over the same month last year.

The American Shipper reported that other East Coast ports, like Savannah and Charleston, have also reported higher volumes in May.
