A NEW super union for the transport industry has been formed. The Transport and General Workers' Union (TGWU) and the South African Transport and Allied Workers' Union (Satawu) recently agreed to merge. They have agreed that the new union will be known as Satawu and will remain affiliated to Cosatu and the International Transport Workers' Federation.
Ezrom Mbyana, from the old Satawu, was elected president, Randall Howard, the former secretary general of the TGWU, was elected general secretary.
One of the main aims of the merger will be to fight the privatisation and restructuring of Transnet. The union has also adopted a transport policy which stresses that transport needs of the poorer sections of the population be met.
