A new rail link through Malawi between the Moatize coal region in Mozambique’s Tete province, and the port of Nacala in Nampula province will also be used to carry passengers and miscellaneous cargo, according to the managing director of Vale Mozambique. Vale, which has the biggest coal mines in Moatize, is financing the construction of the rail link, which is needed to support coal exports from the region. Including passenger and cargo transport is seen as part of the company’s social responsibilities.
