New STS cranes arrive in Port of Durban

Another part of Transnet’s mega-project for upgrading the Port of Durban has got closer to completion, when a vessel carrying three ship-to-shore (STS) cranes arrived off the Port of Durban yesterday morning (November 20). However, unfavourable weather conditions (strong winds) kept the ship out of the harbour, although Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) is monitoring the wind speed and the vessel will be brought in to the Durban container terminal (DCT) as soon as it abates. This will see TPT taking delivery of three brand new, tandem lift STS cranes built by China-based Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co (ZPMC) - first of their kind in Africa and the largest of their kind deployed at any container terminal in the Southern Hemisphere. They can simultaneously handle two 12 metre (40 foot) containers or four 6m (20ft) containers with their lifting capacity of 80 tonnes. Other cranes used in Africa can only lift up to a maximum of two containers at a time. This, said TPT, promises faster, more efficient cargo handling.
