New operators for Maputo harbour

A CONSORTIUM which is expected to invest about US$100 million into the project, has been approved to operate Maputo port, Mozambique's largest harbour
The consortium, headed by Britain's Mersey Docks, has been granted the contract for 15 years by the country's council of ministers, under the government's plan to rehabilitate and modernise the national port and rail systems, to make them more competitive.
According to transport and communications minister Tomas Salomao, the government expects the port eventually to handle eight to 10 million tons of goods annually.
