A NEW internet system to manage the complex task of tracking air freight and baggage containers as they travel the world's airways has been unveiled in Paris by Mercator, the Information Technology division of the Dubai-based Emirates group.
The system, named NOMAD, is tailored to the needs of both passenger and cargo airlines, as well as ground handling agents and airports. Emirates says the aim is to ensure that stocks of containers or `unit load devices' (ULDs) of the right type, quantity and quality are in the right place, at the right time, and at the right cost.
NOMAD also offers advanced inventory, stock control and messaging functionality, damage and repair tracking modules, interline loaning modules and management information system tools.
Handling agents managing containers at airports on behalf of a number of airlines can offer customers radically enhanced service and improved ULD tracking and management, giving them a real competitive edge, the company claims.
NOMAD was recently implemented by Emirates and Sri Lankan Airlines.
