TRUE TO its word,
breakbulk specialist Unishipping will launch a monthly service between South Africa and the Mediterranean next\ month, operated by Organitrans, a wholly owned subsidiary of Unishipping.
Unishipping entered the SA market with a splash in September last year offering a monthly service on the US Gulf and Mexico as well as West Africa routes.
Paris-based general manager Daniel Berrebi hinted at the time that the Mediterranean could be next off the starting blocks, and five months down the line he's honoured his undertaking.
The new Med service, which will operate via West Africa, will deploy multi-purpose tweendeckers with heavy lift capability. The 21 800 ton dwt Mediterranean will launch the service, calling at all West African and Mediterranean ports on inducement.
The idea is to find niche markets, says Alan Ainscow of local agents Bolton Maritime. Once the service is up and running we'll settle on the port rotation.
Organitrans is a trading and shipping organisation which has, for the past ten years, operated monthly breakbulk services from West Africa to the Indian Ocean Islands.
It operates 20 000 to 23 000 ton tweendeckers with heavy lift capacity. With the Unishipping vessels coming from the US Gulf to West and South Africa we'll have the flexibility to use the most suitable vessel for the cargoes on offer, ensuring that we get the right vessel on the right trade lane.
The first vessel will load at the port of Durban on February 7/8.
