THE TRANSNET board has approved capital expenditure of R201m to increase capacity on Spoornet's coal line from 67 to 69 Mt a year.
COALLink, Spoornet's export coal business unit, recently celebrated the milestone delivery of its billionth ton of coal from the coal fields to the port of Richards Bay.
In 1999 some 63,4 Mt of coal was transported on the line, earning R9,2bn in foreign exchange for South Africa, and making this country the second largest coal exporter in the world.
In 2000 the market improved, resulting in the current design operating close to full capacity, Peet Cronje, executive manager of COALLink told FTW.
According to Cronje, COALLink will this financial year transport 66m tons.
