Fleet managers and even company CEOs should be held accountable for accidents in which people die as it is their responsibility to ensure their vehicles are in pristine condition. This is according to Collins Letsoalo, acting chief executive officer of the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), who says road safety is everyone’s business and responsibility. Speaking at the monthly Transport Forum in Johannesburg last week, Letsoalo said it was not just the job of authorities to keep road carnage down. Letsoalo said in an effort to create safer roads legislation had been changed which in future would allow authorities to remove vehicles from yards. “We are not going to have to wait for your fleet to make it onto the roads – we will come into the yards and take unroadworthy vehicles out of the systems.”
