Johannesburg-based Shipping & General Transport has just produced an updated version of the distance chart for the Gauteng container zones – focused on each of the approximately 350 suburbs and verifying its distance accuracy. “The point of origination has been kept unchanged as Houer Road, City Deep,” CEO Regan Moodley told FTW. “This being the central hub and current location of our provincial inland port.” The original container zones utilised by the industry date back to the inception of containerised freight in the province, and were collated at a time where only graphic scaling methodologies were possible. So S&G set up a task team during the latter part of 2014, assigned with updating the container zones for all SA provinces. “This,” said Moodley, “was designed not only to update our own databases, but also to keep the industry role-players abreast of a list that is improved, accurate and relevant.” The first zone list for Gauteng has just been published – showing the old container zones, the actual distances and the new applicable container zones. Those for the other provinces are still being assembled, and will be completed in the order of Durban, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and finally East London. Should you wish a copy of the Gauteng list, go to www.ftwonline.co.za and click on the Container Zone Distances menu item. FTW will make the other lists available as they are completed.
