New equipment rolls in

As part of the R438- million programme to beef up container handling capacity at the Durban ro-ro and Maydon Wharf terminals, Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) has just taken delivery of two brand new mobile harbour cranes. These are designed to help handle 210 000 TEUs a year of the 400 000-TEU overflow from the berth deepening and refurbishment at the Durban container terminal (DCT) Pier 2, which will be diverted to the new container terminals at the ro-ro terminal and Maydon Wharf. These LHM550C cranes are part of a fleet of six ordered from Liebherr in Austria, and arrived on board the MV Trina vessel on May 8. Two more cranes are scheduled to arrive in June with the remaining two arriving in November. Other equipment on order to boost container handling at the ro-ro and Maydon Wharf terminals includes reach stackers, haulers and trailers.
