The Jebel Ali port in Dubai’s new Container Terminal 3 received its first vessel in October and is gearing up to become fully operational by 2015. Earlier this month, the port also handled the biggest-ever bulk vessel, Saba Shipping’s ‘Mega Star’ – more than a quarter of a kilometre long at 229 metres – carrying around 79 000 tonnes of reinforcing steel from Turkey. Once fully operational, the container terminal will add a further 4 million TEUs of capacity to the port, taking total handling capacity at Jebel Ali to 19 million TEU's.
