New container handler reduces operating costs

Versatile machine offers range of on site benefits
A NEW container handling machine that overcomes a range of practical problems associated with the movement of containers on site is now being marketed locally.
A key element of the Mobicon System, designed to handle any length of container from 4.6 to 14.6 metres, is the fact that it lifts the load from the bottom. “This enables the operator to handle GP containers, flat beds or bolsters, tank containers and curtain sided containers and keep the overall height very low,” says Ken Mouritzen of Big Lift Trucks, distributor in Africa for the equipment.
“With CKDs or vehicles imported in containers, car manufactures have huge container unpacking and distribution operations,” says Mouritzen, “and this type of equipment is ideally suited to their needs as it can also be used in the plant to move sub assemblies.”
On site, the Mobicon’s 33 tonne capacity takes laden containers from road trucks or receiving pad around the site and places them adjacent to doors, or inside the warehouse when necessary.
It also permits the effective separation of the destuffing or stuffing operations and lessens the hazard of cargo damage because the container is placed on the floor which negates the requirement for loading docks.
But there are many other benefits, says Mouritzen.
“Container forklifts weigh approximately 50 tonnes and then carry up to 27 tonne containers. Therefore they have a maximum weight of 80 tonnes or more, and many industrial estate pavements are not designed to carry these loadings. The Mobicon, because of its low ground pressure bearing ratio, can operate on any surface including bitumen and compacted gravel without causing damage to the pavement.”
Its flexibility is an added advantage. “It’s the first system that can actually get containers into restricted warehouse spaces,” says Mouritzen.
And from the operator’s point of view,
real-time loading and unloading programmes can be used increasing labour efficiencies and truck turnaround, decreasing operating expenses and reducing site congestion, he added.
“Mobicon operating costs are also far lower than a conventional equivalent container handler and the machine is more versatile than self loading trailers.”
