Bonnie Masuku, general manager of Bidvest International Logistics, understands the demands of the cargo industry deeply. Ref lecting on her journey, she cites a quote from the legendary soccer player Pelé: “Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice, and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.” It encapsulates, to a certain extent, her own path in logistics, highlighting the dedication and passion required to succeed in the field.“I wanted to be where the action was,” she says, ref lecting her eagerness to dive into the heart of the industry. Masuku is also known as someone who does not shy away from a challenge. “Getting cargo moving and knowing that I played a part in getting that item on a shelf brings me great joy,” she adds, emphasising the satisfaction she derives from her role in the logistics process.Masuku acknowledges that the logistics sector is not always an easy environment to work in.“I was fortunate to have a female role model at a senior level who guided me on what to study and where to gain exposure within the organisation to shape my career path. In fairness, several male leaders significantly contributed to my growth as well, especially at management level. To receive their support, I had to demonstrate my own commitment and sacrifice, ensuring I was prepared when opportunities arose. Building a solid network was crucial for gaining the knowledge and support I needed to advance.”Masuku says it is exciting to see more young women considering logistics as a career opportunity. “This is a dynamic sector with numerous facets, offering vast scope for growth. There are many women in this field who are eager to share their knowledge, mentor, and support the next generation of women in logistics.”
