Namibia outlines ambitious rail expansion plans

TransNamib CEO Johny Smith

Namibia’s rail authority TransNamib is keenly looking at expanding domestic volumes, according to CEO Johny Smith.

“Currently we’re sitting at 18% market share of freight moved internally by rail and we’re looking at growing that to 50% over the next five years.”

For a country that was recently lauded for having “the best roads in Africa” following a World Bank look at African logistics, it’s not a crucial requirement for Namibia to implement a multi-modal shift in freight.

Smith though emphasised that it was a simple matter of securing longevity for their logistics infrastructure.

“We simply have to move more cargo from road to rail.”
