The Namibian government is set to hold a workshop in March to review the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) agreement launched by the African Union (AU) late last year.
Namibia is one of the AU member states that has not yet signed the commitment. Botswana, Mali, Kenya, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa and Zimbabwe are among the 23 African countries that have signed the agreement.
Namibian Ministry of Works and Transport spokesperson, Julius Ngweda, revealed that Namibia could not commit to the SAATM agreement until a “number of issues” had been addressed.
According to him, these issues include capacity, aviation safety and security, frequencies, tariffs and mechanisms for fair competition.
The country’s national carrier, Air Namibia, is also reportedly struggling with cash flow problems.
