The Namibian ministry of agriculture, water and forestry plans to slaughter 2 520 tonnes of meat during the 2015/2016 financial year for the Zimbabwean market.
A 2015/2016 accountability report suggested that the Zimbabwean market could take more, but droughts in 2014/15 meant many cattle were not in good export condition.
In 2013 the Namibian government decided to open up livestock markets in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) for farmers in the Northern Communal Areas (NCAs) - excluding the Zambezi region because of foot-and-mouth in circulation among wild buffalo.
The NCAs is home to over 60% of Namibia’s population and they also house at least 60% of the livestock population.
Beef exports to Zimbabwe are also encouraged by a joint venture between the Namibian private sector and farmers’ cooperatives.
