Namibia-Botswana railway project makes headway

While no financial institutions have shown interest in funding the 1 500-kilometre Trans Kalahari Railway Project, Namibia and Botswana have taken the first step by setting up an office in Windhoek.

Director of railway affairs in the Namibian ministry of works, Robert Kalomo, told online news agency AllAfrica.com that "the office will be manned by six officials, three from each country," adding the offices would address a range of issues, including legal and cross border matters, which needed to be agreed on before the project proceeded.

Kalomo pointed out that the initial project cost of US$15-billion estimated in 2011 had most likely increased; however, he noted that investors selected to carry out the massive project could approach institutions such as the World Bank and the African Development Bank.
