IT CERTAINLY wasn't a happy Christmas for one
of Spoornet's Cape-based female train drivers when the train and four coaches she was steering ran out of line inside the Paarden Eiland container harbour area.
Spoornet has confirmed that the incident, which happened in the week prior to Christmas, was not entirely the fault of the unnamed driver. Instead engineers at the scene advised them that a pointsman put the train on a dead-end line and the tracks literally ran out before the train could stop.
But, they added, the driver should at least have noticed that her line was running
out of tracks, and slammed on brakes. Instead, once
the dust had settled, she emerged from the cabin and asked: "Where did the line go?"
There were no injuries reported but damage to the train and two adjacent tracks was estimated at 'a few hundred thousand rands'.
