Work on the upgrading
of Mthatha airport has
taken off again after
several months of delays
to a number of tenders,
according to Ncedo
Kumbaca, spokesperson
for the Eastern Cape
Department of Transport.
The civil works contract
was awarded to Ludumo/
Al-mo JV and covers
extensions to car park,
temporary parking and
sewer line, and was
scheduled to take
12 months.
Work is also due to start
on a new security fence.
Plans to spend
R250-million to build a
new runway capable of
handling a Boeing 737
are on hold as the
province tries to raise
funds from the national
Department of Transport,
“which has indicated its
willingness to consider
the support for the
upgrade of the airport,”
says Kumbuca.
