MSC’s growing interest in passengers

News of MSC’s interest in the acquisition of Italian national carrier ITA has raised questions about the shipping major’s possible diversification plans.

This after the recent announcement that the Swiss-based carrier and Lufthansa are in talks to buy ITA.

MSC says the move stems from the possibility of creating synergies in the cargo and passenger sectors.

“This is a curious case,” says Peter Sand, Xeneta chief analyst and market expert.

“You would expect MSC to spend more money on the transport of goods than passengers around the globe, although they do also have MSC Cruises – so it may make sense.

“And splashing out $1.5 billion of current profits – does it make a difference? Only time will tell.”
