While SAECS carries the lion's share of South Africa's perishable exports, the balance is taken up by independents, one of the majors being Mediterranean Shipping Company.
According to Cape Town-based director Mike Economou, because of MSC's high level frequency on the Mediterranean route, the line has become a big reefer player into that market.
And we've found the PPECB to be flexible. Where there's been a good crop, they do look at other shipping lines. According to Economou it's all a question of negotiation between shipper, shipping line and the PPECB to come up with the best rate and frequency.
