MSC's logistics division MEDLOG has broken ground on a major new state-of-the-art cold storage facility that will help to boost meat export capacity in Georgia in the United States.

The landmark 27 034 square-metre cold storage facility located in Savannah marks a significant addition to the export potential of poultry, pork and meat producers in the US Southeast and Midwest.

The facility will introduce around 20 000 freezer and cooler pallet positions to the local market and is designed to process up to 1.3 tonnes of blast freezing per day. This will enable producers to directly ship raw products to the cold storage facility for blast freezing and then export to overseas markets in South America and Asia.

The facility has the capability to handle both frozen and chilled cargo. It will include 42 loading docks and has been designed to serve rail cargo, giving producers as far away as the US Midwest access to global markets.

MSC USA President and CEO Fabio Santucci said “the development is an example of how the business continues to expand the global reach of US exporters and importers by enhancing landside capacity”.

“We've designed this cold storage facility with the necessary specifications to enable trade opportunities for businesses as far inland as the Midwest,” Santucci said.

The development will benefit The Port of Savannah, the third busiest container terminal in the US. As a significant investment in the port's future growth, the facility is expected to create more than 100 jobs in the city.

“MSC has been serving US businesses nationwide since 1985, and this facility allows us to further strengthen that decades-long partnership,” Santucci said.
