MSC acquires vessels de-chartered by Maersk

MSC is reportedly taking delivery of several vessels from Global Ship Lease (GSL) as their charters with Maersk Line come to an end.

Industry coverage from Container News confirms that the 6 008 TEU GSL Violetta has been committed to MSC for an estimated 36-38 months at privately agreed rates.

According to MB Shipbrokers, current charter rates for a vessel of this size are around US$67 000 per day.

The GSL Violetta will join MSC’s fleet once its Maersk charter concludes.

Analysts from sea intelligence platform Linerlytica say MSC’s aggressive acquisition and chartering strategy is reducing the pool of vessels available for market charter, a factor contributing to elevated charter rates.

GSL’s own filings indicate that GSL Violetta, along with other vessels, has had charter options exercised and is expected to transition to new charters of 36-38 months starting in 2026-2027.

While public disclosures do not always name charterers explicitly, the timing and duration of these commitments align with industry reports suggesting a move to MSC.
