Mozambique businesses push to scrap import rule

The Confederation of Business Associations of Mozambique (CTA) has called for the repeal of the country’s Conformity Assessment Programme for imported goods, saying it delays the customs clearance process.

“The CTA’s position in relation to the Conformity Assessment Programme [PAC] at origin is that the government revoke this law, which harms the consumer and especially companies,” CTA president, Álvaro Massingue said after a meeting with the Tax Authority on Friday.

Massingue said the programme delayed the customs clearance process when importing products into Mozambique.

The government programme aims to guarantee the quality and safety of imported products through mandatory verification and certification before shipment. It aims to protect public health, the environment and consumer safety, ensuring that imported products meet the standards established by Mozambican, regional and international regulations.

The PAC requires imported products to be certified by authorised bodies before arriving in the country.

Massingue added that the association was sending its proposals regarding the local content law to the government.

“We have a deadline to present our position and you will soon know what the CTA’s contribution to this Local Content Policy is. The private sector has been waiting for a long time and I hope things will improve,” said Massingue.
