Motorists face fuel tax hikes despite drop in petrol price

The petrol price is set to decrease tomorrow, March 4, according to the Department of Energy.

Motorist will pay 19 cents per litre less for petrol, while diesel will drop by 54 cents per litre.

“The price drops are attributable to the lower cost of international petroleum products, which were significantly impacted by oil price weakness on the back of a global market downturn due to the coronavirus outbreak,” Businesstech reported.

It added that international product prices for petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin had all decreased during the period under review.

Motorists though will have to contend with fuel tax hikes in April following finance minister Tito Mboweni’s decision to increase fuel taxes by 25 cents per litre – an announcement made during last Thursday’s national budget statement. – Zoë van Rooyen
