KEVIN MAYHEW CHANGES TO the Road Freight Act due in March are to be welcomed as they will further enable the relevant authorities to remove unscrupulous operators who are not maintaining optimum levels of safety when transporting hazardous chemicals. BP Freight sales representative, Paul Loram, says that the hazardous chemical industry has, to date, been self regulating as the relevant acts and legislation had not yet been passed or implemented. “The authorities did not have the power to act on unscrupulous operators. However, this is set to change by the end of March when policing is in place – including the training of the first hazardous chemicals officers for policing,” he explained. BP Freight has operated as a hazardous chemicals forwarder for many years, particularly in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique and Malawi where it offers a consolidation service as well as dedicated vehicles from two to 34 tons.
