More high-tech cargo scanners on the cards

More high-tech cargo scanners are expected be installed at ports of entry across the country,  said South African Revenue Service (Sars) commissioner Tom Moyane.

The commissioner was speaking at a launch event held to officially unveil a R38-million scanner at the Port of Cape Town on Wednesday, although FTW Online (FTWO) understands the scanner has been in operation since May 13.

FTW, sister publication to FTW Online, reported earlier this month that industry had called on customs to look into processes around its cargo scanners which they said were currently driving up costs.

The two scanners are currently operational at the Port of Durban and Cape Town and were introduced to improve efficiency, with stopped containers being released more speedily than has been the case to date.

“It has however in some cases increased costs because it has resulted in double handling of containers,” said Dave Watts, a maritime consultant for the SA Association of Freight Forwarders (Saaff).
