With growing flows of refugees from troubled countries in Western Asia, the Middle East and North Africa pouring into Europe, large numbers of countries in Europe are re-imposing strict controls at often previously-open border posts.
There is even the suggestion that the countries in the Schengen area, the single European zone with borderless travel between 26 states, could all start to impose heightened security procedures.
Hungary, Germany, Austria and Slovakia are all tightening up certain of their borders, and reports are that Poland and the Netherlands are considering whether to follow suit. And even as far west as Britain, which still retains border controls, there are increased security checks both on the French and UK sides of the Channel.
With this move accelerating around the continent, it is hitting truckers with costly delays as their vehicles get log-jammed at border posts.
The result of this is that they are reported to be considering or even already introducing demurrage charges and other new fees to compensate for these extra costs.
