Mercedes exports through EL rise 3000%

EXPORTS OF Mercedes Benz cars through East London have grown by 3000% in the first three months of this year, according to the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa). Figures released by Naamsa show that the company exported 3 626 vehicles up to March. Over the same period last year exports were 117. Exports by Port Elizabeth-based Delta Motor Corporation are 273% up over the same period - from 15 to 56 units. The success of DaimlerChrysler has had a knock-on effect for the economy and port of East London, according to Peter Miles, chief executive officer of the East London Industrial Development Zone. Miles has been involved in discussions with up-country motor manufacturers to use the expanded port facilities for the import and export of vehicles and components. "There are exciting prospects already on line," he says.
