Mega-ship blaze at Port of Hamburg

The 145 528 deadweight tonne (DWT) containership Alula, managed by United Arab Shipping (UASC), caught fire early on the morning of August 28 in the German port of Hamburg, according to international media reports.

Preliminary investigation shows that the fire erupted in container or containers on board the vessel.

A 36-man firefighting team managed to bring the fire under control in three and a half hours.

There were no reports of casualties, although it is believed that the 13 500 TEU ship suffered significant damage.

Alula (IMO 9525883) was built in 2012 and is Malta-flagged.
