Mauritius expands freight rebate scheme

In a bid to enrich the competitiveness of products being exported to Reunion Island and Africa, Mauritius has expanded its Freight Rebate Scheme (FRS).

The scheme consists of a 25% refund of freight costs, which equates to a maximum of US$300 on a standard container. However, the FRS only applies to selected approved ports in Africa, Madagascar, and Reunion Island, said Enterprise Mauritius (EM) to regional newspaper, Southern Times.

“The Freight Rebate Scheme has been revised and enhanced to cover additional ports in Africa and Reunion Island and opened to all shipping lines. The revised scheme (new additional ports) is effective retrospectively from 10th July 2015,” said EM.

The scheme covers 44 ports across Angola, Madagascar, Morocco, Mozambique, Seychelles, South Africa, Tanzania, Cameroon, Congo, Egypt, Gabon, Ghana, Ivory Coast and Kenya.

Landlocked countries are also eligible for refund from port to port freight only. This applies to Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Lesotho, Malawi, Mali, Niger, Rwanda, Swaziland, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
