Maputo to be dredged to 14.2m

In one of the biggest investments in
the port of Maputo in recent years
all the partners in the Maputo Port
Development Company (MPDC)
have signed a contract to dredge the
approach channels from 11 metres
to 14.2 metres.
The partners are CFM
(Mozambique ports and railways),
Grindrod and Dubai Ports.
Vessels of up to 80 000 dwt
(deadweight) tons capacity will be
able to access the port after the
dredging of the approximately 76km
length of the North, Polana, Xefina,
Catembe and Matola channels.
Dredging the channel is one of
the key projects embarked upon
by MPDC and various terminal
operators within the Port of
Maputo recently. These include
the expansion of the ferrochrome
terminal, new grain terminal,
the expansion of the container
terminal and rehabilitation of
berths 3, 4 and 5.
