Maputo port gets thumbs up

Now a year after it started using the Mozambique port of Maputo for vehicle imports by roll-on, roll-off (ro-ro) shipping services, Nissan South Africa has been encouraged enough by the trial-run results to continue with vehicle movement through the port. According to vehicle logistics senior manager, Gerald Heuer, although volumes are lower because of recessed market conditions, Nissan will continue using the port as its second harbour. Although the Durban port is currently the only harbour used for containerised imports, investigations are still continuing into the future potential of the Maputo port. Consideration is being given to whether to use Maputo for importing containerised, completely knocked-down (CKD) units in the near future.
