Transnet Freight Rail will shut down its manganese line for large-scale maintenance on August 11 and expects to reopen it on August 20.
The rail utility is set to spend R176 million on the annual overhaul.
The 965-kilometre railway line spanning two provinces - Swartkops and De Aar in the Eastern Cape and De Aar and Postmasburg in the Northern Cape - will undergo specialised infrastructure maintenance and upgrade projects. There will be no traffic flowing on the line during this period as this is a pre-planned exercise following consultations with customers, a TFR spokesman said.
