The mammoth delivery of 186 000 kilograms of cargo from Johannesburg to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was all in a day’s work for charter specialist Chapman Freeborn. It was undertaken late last year for a telecoms company. “The client asked us to provide the quickest, most cost-effective solution,” says acting country manager: Africa, Alfie Arrowsmith. The company offered a solution on scheduled MD11 cargo aircraft from Johannesburg up to Entebbe, Uganda – where Chapman Freeborn has an office – and then trucked the cargo up to Goma and Bunia. “We had to coordinate all the receiving, building and loading of the cargo in Johannesburg and in Uganda we had to have our operations person on the ground to ensure smooth customs procedures and trucking in Entebbe, up to the two DRC towns,” he says.
