The planned 68-kilometre Majuba railway – currently under construction – is scheduled to begin operating on May 31 next year, said Mpumalanga premier David Mabuza, during his State of the Province Address (Sopa).
The railway, operated by Transnet Freight Rail (TFR), will connect the province’s coal mines to Eskom’s Majuba power station near Ermelo in Mpumalanga.
“The project is expected to yield lower lifecycle transportation costs, improve coal delivery turnaround times and enable Majuba to access more coal sources than is currently the case,” said Mabuza.
