Jay New . . . developing cost-effective transport
solutions for customers
Ray Smuts
NEW, PROCLAIMS the Oxford English Dictionary, signifies 'of recent origin or arrival', which ties in rather nicely with Cape Town newcomer Jay New, who has been appointed new general manager, sales and marketing, for Maersk Sealand South Africa.
African trading is hardly new to tall, bespectacled, New, who no doubt is far more clued up about cotton, coffee and sisal at this stage than citrus and deciduous by virtue of seven years - the last with Maersk - in shipping and forwarding in Kenya.
For the past two years New, 32, has served as commodity manager of Maersk Sealand's Africa department, based in Copenhagen. He succeeds Jorn Rene Nielsen who has returned to Copenhagen to become involved in special container projects.
New's appointment coincides with changes within Maersk Sealand South Africa to incorporate an 18-member sales and marketing team, most of whom are based in the Mother City.
The buzzword within Maersk Sealand is to become a competent ally in the trade, to build on existing relationships, to develop our technologies as trade technology improves and, in co-operation with our customers, to produce cost-effective transport, says Kent-born New who holds a B. Ed (Hons) in Education from the University of Leeds in York.
