Leonard Neill FREIGHT CAPACITY between South Africa and Germany is set for take-off once Lufthansa starts its double-daily service in November. The airline plans to extend its Johannesburg - Munich service beyond the seasonal November-April period to become a year-round operation. The Munich flights are in addition to the daily Frankfurt flights to and from South Africa, which are operated by a Boeing 747-400. The Munich service will employ an Airbus A340-300, which has good cargo capacity, and will run parallel to the daily Cape Town-Johannesburg-Frankfurt flight. On the planning boards at the German airline’s headquarters now is a service to Durban as part of the Munich run. The A340-300 is seen as a suitable answer to Durban’s needs which are not served directly by any European-destined airline at present. This matter will, however, remain under consideration until late October when the decision will be announced.
