‘Living the spirit of transformation’

At Buffalo Freight transformation is not just a tally on a scorecard, but rather about achieving socioeconomic objectives that ensure a united South Africa, says managing director Margrit Wolff. With the awarding of its Black Economic Empowerment Level 4 certificate late in 2008, the company has come full circle proving it is truly South African. “We are extremely proud of this achievement,” said Wolff. “This process came not because we had to do it, but rather from what was happening within the company. It is real and we all know and experience it. Our BEE status is not an intangible share certificate that belongs to someone we have never seen – no, it is us.” Without one share being owned by a black shareholder, the company achieved its BEE status. Wolff believes this was due to its inherent commitment to a united South Africa. “It was a fascinating process that we found extremely easy – everything just fell into place. We did not change the way we operated to achieve this as we have always been committed to our black suppliers, our charities and the sponsoring of small black businesses – all contributing factors to your BEE status.” According to Wolff the company did not lose clients because it was not BEE compliant. “I have believed in this from the first day – to foster and develop the talent of our employees and ensure a diversified culture in the company. All are contributing factors to our BEE status.” BEE, launched by the government to redress the inequalities of the past by giving previously disadvantaged groups economic opportunities previously not available to them, measures aspects such as employment equity, skills development, targets for ownership, management and preferential procurement. According to the Department of Trade and Industry, BEE must however address the economic needs of South Africa in a sustainable manner. “This was not something we did to get more business, but rather an inherent belief in who we are and where we are going. We are committed to ensuring everyone in our organisation has the opportunities to grow professionally. The employees know they are working for an organisation that respects everyone.”
