Currency fluctuations and landside logistics capacity remain two of the greatest challenges facing South African exporters, says Glenn Delve, national commercial director for MSC SA. “High tariffs are another limiting factor that we must address if we want to grow our export base.” With Africa purported to be the next global growth area, there are major opportunities in adding value and beneficiating – especially taking into consideration the large amount of base minerals exported out of the country. According to Delve, it is essential that one continually explores opportunities to increase exporting. Companies should also do all they can to offer a one-stopshop service to clients and improve the logistics chain for increased customer satisfaction. “Employing greater capacity vessels on major trades to accommodate the required tonnage is just as important,” says Delve. “A pendulum service serving Europe, South Africa and the Far East and vice versa can make a major difference. We should also be investigating the various ports of call that are not being covered at present.” He says by manufacturers making a conscious effort to increase and add value South African exports can and will flourish.
