KZN counts the cost of the floods

The government has been asked to declare KZN a disaster area following the floods.

KwaZulu Natal premier Willies Mchunu has requested that the national government classify the province as a disaster area following around R1.1 billion worth of flood damage to infrastructure.

“Railways, roads, houses full of furniture and personal possessions were damaged and at places destroyed entirely," Mchunu said, noting that the provincial government was unable to deal with the fall-out on its own.

Durban alone has incurred infrastructure damage to the tune of R685 million, said the eThekwini municipality in a statement

The port of Durban was also hard hit by the floods and assessments to establish the full extent of damage caused by the storm are currently being conducted by all Transnet operating divisions.
