‘Joint effort needed to grow maritime sector’

“South Africans exported goods worth an all-time high of R 68 457 billion during the month of November 2011 and just under R223 billion from January to April 2012,” Collins Makhado, executive head of corporate strategy for the SA Maritime Safety Authority (Samsa) told the Western Cape Exporters’ Club recently. “In that context you will understand that shipping ports and logistics are very important as ships transport and ports facilitate the transfer of the exports being traded between yourselves and your global trade partners. It is therefore time that government and all stakeholders in the maritime industry take hands and work together to bring about the growth we want to see.” According to Makhado, exporters are key stakeholders in the pursuit of a globally competitive maritime sector and one of the most important conduits towards transforming society.
