Statistics SA has confirmed that South Africa had added at least 900 000 jobs from June 2015 to March this year, with the year’s first quarter (Q1) heralding at least 22 000 new vacancies.

The agency identified the non-agricultural formal sector as the biggest contributor to job creation since June 2015.

As for the lion’s share of jobs created in Q1, the community services sector saw at least 19 000 new positions.

And although the recent national elections offered part-time work to at least 13 000 people, director for the agency’s Quarterly Employment Survey, Matlapane Masupye, said the 9.2% overall increase in employment over the last year generally boded well.

“We can safely say employment has been increasing at a steady pace.”
