The Japanese government has granted a soft loan of the equivalent of over R3 billion for the second phase of development at the northern Mozambican port of Nacala.
The loan will be used for consultancy services, engineering work and the acquisition of port equipment.
Once Phase 2 comes on-stream it will increase the cargo handling capacity of the port to over five million tonnes a year by 2020.
As part of this, the container terminal will be transferred from the South Quay to the North Quay, because of its greater handling capacity thanks to modern equipment and more space for a container park.
